PI Day

Do you know what Pi Day is? Pi Day is an annual celebration for the mathematical constant Ï€ (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14. Pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, which is approximately 3.14159. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point. Kingman Elementary/Middle School has celebrated Pi Week at our school for eight years. Students get to participate in a memorization competition. Whoever remembers the most digits of pi gets to throw a pie at one of the math teachers. During Pi Week the students dress up for the fun occasion.

Monday is similar day, so you dress like someone else.

Tuesday is shape day, so you wear geometric shapes.

Wednesday is perpendicular day, so wear plaid.

Thursday is parallel day, so wear stripes.

Friday is number day, so wear clothing with numbers.

SO, be sure to participate!!!

National Anthem Day

When was the last time you sang to the nation anthem?  Well, March 3 is National Anthem Day; it is a day celebrating the creation of the national anthem. The United States anthem is the Star-Spangled Banner written by a lawyer.   The Star-Spangled Banner was created during the War of 1812.  It was written by Francis Scott Key when he saw that the flag was still flying over Fort McHenry after a night of fighting.  The war ended when a peace agreement was signed in Belgium.  Francis died about thirty years after the war from pleurisy (inflammation of the lungs). Even though Francis died, the national anthem is still close to many American's hearts.  Most people think that National Anthem Day is on September 14 (the day it was written), but it is on the day congress approved it as the National Anthem.  So, make sure you sing the national anthem on March 3.

Polar Bear Club

Have you ever heard of a club that seems completely crazy? Have you even considered joining that club? One of the most known of the many crazy clubs is the Polar Bear Club. The Polar Bear Club is a group of people who will jump into a water source that is frozen or near freezing. Members of the Polar Bear Club live all over the world. Most of the members live near the ocean.  However, some live by lakes or rivers. One thing that differentiates them from others is that they will jump in in very little clothing. Most of them only were a pair of shorts or a bikini. However, some of the less crazed will swim wearing normal clothing. I for one recently joined the club. My polar plunge happened because I was on an island in my pond with my cousins and our kayak floated away. So, I had to jump in and swim after it so we wouldn’t be stuck there all night. Many of the members have even recorded videos of themselves swimming. Unfortunately, my experience wasn’t recorded, but you could Google videos of others for some entertainment.
