The third Saturday in April (this year it is the 19th)
is National High Five Day! A day to give everyone you see a high five; this
includes friends, family, and total strangers. Usually, high fives are for
celebrating victories and special events, but not today. Although it is
referred to as “national” it was not passed to be considered a national holiday.
This day was created in 2002 by some college student from the University of
Virginia. The act of giving a high five dates back to 1977, where they were
exchanged during a basketball game. There is even a website on national high
five day that you can go on to help raise money by giving high fives for cancer
research at http://www.nationalhighfiveday.com/. So, make sure to give high fives to everyone you see on April 17!!
